Making a professional impression

The HXR-MC2500 provides a professional look and shooting style which is ideal for weddings, corporate communications or education facilities. While light and easily portable, its full Shoulder Mount design means your clients immediately know you mean business.

Workflow flexibility is enhanced by the ability to record directly onto a removable memory card or a 32GB internal flash memory in High Definition or Standard Definition. With this combination of the internal flash memory and memory card allows recording functions such as “Relay” and “Simultaneous” are available. When Sony’s L-Series InfoLithium battery NP-F970 (optional) is used, the HXR-MC2500 is capable of continuous long recording of up to 14 hours– perfect for those occasions where you don’t want to stop recording, such as weddings or business conferences.

The HXR-MC2500 is designed to be the ideal, entry-level match for almost any type of non-linear workflow. It’s an exceptionally cost-effective production package for DVD or Blu-ray content, one that’s flexible enough to express your creative ideas and meet your client’s requirements.

Along with two cold shoes, the HXR-MC2500 features one Sony Multi-Interface hot shoe, which allows the attachment of proprietary accessories such as lights and microphones. The hot shoe design means no separate cables will be required for audio accessories and lights will not require a separate battery or power source since they can draw off the camera battery. The two standard shoes provide mounting for third-party lights, field monitors, microphones, wireless receivers, and other on-camera accessories.

For live monitoring, there is an HDMI output, plus composite output which is on a locking BNC connector to ensure the cable doesn't get accidentally get yanked loose during a live broadcast. Video can be recorded internally to the 32GB flash memory, which stores about 170 minutes hours at the 24 Mbps (FX) quality setting, or a SDHC/SDXC or MemoryStick memory card.

Wide 26.8mm Angle Lens
With 12x zoom, the lens features a 26.8mm equivalent focal length when at its widest setting, helping to minimize the times a wide angle adapter or converter will be required
Exmor R CMOS sensor
The Exmor R CMOS has been redesigned from the previous model to deliver up to 0.8 lux sensitivity in SD mode. In part this sensitivity bump comes from the use of backside illumination, which moves much of the circuity to the back of the sensor enabling larger photosites which can capture more light
OLED Tru-Finder and 3" LCD Panel
The Tru-Finder viewfinder uses OLED technology for a better viewing angle and features a resolution of 1.44 million dots, adequate for critical manual focusing. There is also a 3" LCD panel for when the camera is not being used over the shoulder, which features a 0.92 million dot resolution. The LCD screen can be close or disabled when not in use to conserve battery
Low-Light Shooting
The HXR-MC2500 is capable of up to 0.8 lux minimum illumination when using manual settings with the shutter set to 1/15 second, the iris at f/1.8, and the gain at 33dB. Plus, there is a built-in LED video light that casts 800 lumens brightness when 1.6' from the subject
Wi-Fi Enabled with NFC Connectivity
Through Wi-Fi it is possible to operate a number of camera settings from a smartphone or tablet. You can also monitor a live feed, which is ideal for setups - such as a news conference - where the camera will be placed somewhere that people aren't allowed during the event. The NFC feature saves time, allowing you to pair the camera with NFC-enabled mobile devices simply by tapping the device to the camera. Functions you can access through the app include:
  • Record start/stop
  • Zoom
  • Iris
  • Touch Auto Focus
Hybrid Recording
The camera comes equipped with 32GB of built-in memory, offering approximately 170 minutes in the 24 Mbps (FX) quality setting. There is also a memory card slot that can accept SD, SDHC, SDXC, and Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo cards - all available separately - for even longer recording times. Simultaneous modes lets you record to both media at once, while Relay will roller over from one media to the other once the fist fills up. Relay makes indefinite recording possible, as long as the battery lasts or AC power is available
Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe
In addition to the two standard cold shoes, the proprietary Multi-Interface shoe allows the camera to talk directly to a range of accessories from Sony without requiring separate wiring. Compatible accessories include microphones, wireless receivers, and even flashes

Note: Multi-Interface shoe is not compatible with accessories that use the earlier Active Interface (AIS) shoe
DV Recording
In SD mode, the HXR-MC2500 records in DV codec - the same format used by MiniDV tape cameras - and puts the file in an AVI wrapper. This format is supported by most editing programs, and features less compression than the MPEG-2 SD mode found on many other cameras
Assignable Lens Ring
The lens ring can be set to manually control focus, exposure, white balance, iris, or shutter speed - giving you direct access without having to go through the camera's menu
Time Code
It is possible to set SMPTE timecode or user bit (UB) for multi camera productions or to make it easier to locate footage in post
BNC Composite Output
The composite output uses a BNC terminal, which is a locking connector that reduces the risk of accidentally yanking the cable out during a live broadcast
Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Active Mode
In addition to normal optical image stabilization, Active Mode provides compensation for the sway that occurs while waking
Quick AF System
Designed to improve auto focus accuracy even in low-light conditions

Wide-angle G Lens

The HXR-MC2500 comes equipped with a sophisticated G Lens that incorporates Sony's unique optical design technology and quality control, delivering exceptional performance on a par with some of the best lenses in the industry. The HXR-MC2500 itself is optimised to perfectly complement the G Lens with an advanced image sensor and Sony’s famous image processing technology. This improves picture performance whether zooming in on the action, or getting a perspective on the big picture with a 26.8mm* lens offering the widest angles in this class of camera, which enables wide-angle shooting even in tight spaces.

*35mm or equivalent.

  • Highly-sensitive Exmor™ R CMOS sensor and built-in LED light

The HXR-MC2500 is capable of shooting clearly even in low-light or indoor environments. Its highly-sensitive Exmor™ R CMOS sensor adopts a back-illuminated technology that enables the image sensor to utilize incidental light more efficiently, helping the videographer to achieve rich image quality even during low-light shooting situations. Moreover, the HXR-MC2500 is also equipped with a convenient built-in LED light for valuable extra illumination when needed.

  • Optical SteadyShot with Active Mode

This feature ensures smooth movement while recording footage in many challenging shooting situations. In addition, Sony’s innovative 3-Way Shake-Cancelling technology adds electronic roll stability for even smoother video capture. This latest version of image stabilisation technology realizes images that are up to 10x steadier for wide angle shooting than conventional Optical SteadyShot images. As the user zooms in, an intelligent digital image stabiliser starts to blend in and work together with its optical counterpart to effectively reduce camera shake. This technology also reduces shake in the rolling direction that commonly occurs when shooting while walking.

  • Wide angle view, high contrast OLED viewfinder and 3-inch wide LCD panel

The HXR-MC2500 is equipped with an OLED Tru-Finder™ electronic viewfinder, offering a high resolution of approximately 1.44 million dots with high contrast levels. Sony’s proprietary viewfinder technologies allow for better tonal reproduction and more detailed picture information when shooting. In addition, there is also the built-in 3-inch wide high resolution LCD panel (approximately 0.92 million dots) for crisp and bright views.

  • Wi-Fi/NFC functions for seamless connection to smartphones

The HXR-MC2500 can connect to mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets via a Wi-Fi connection, enabling monitoring and remote control functions such as start/stop recording, zoom control, iris control and touch auto focus. Furthermore, it is also NFC-capable (Near Field Communications) to allow easy, one-touch wireless connections to compatible mobile devices.

    • Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe

The MI Shoe expands your options to use accessories without cables, such as the UWP-D11 wireless microphone receiver and XLR audio input by XLR adapter.

    • Manual Lens Ring with Assignable Parameters

Using the assignable lens ring, users can manually adjust key parameters like Focus, White Balance, Exposure, AE Shift, Iris priority and Shutter Speed priority. Users can control the G Lens iris to create an out-of-focus effect in the foreground or background. Shutter-speed can also be controlled to create special effects, such as the flowing motion of a waterfall or bird wings in flight etc.

    • Ideal for long event shooting with 32GB internal flash memory and low power consumption

A 32GB internal flash memory enables longer duration recording of more than 150 minutes. In addition, by using a combination of the internal flash memory and memory card in the MS/SD slot, recording functions such as “Relay” and “Simultaneous” for backup can be available. When Sony’s L-Series InfoLithium battery NP-F970 (optional) is used, the HXR-MC2500 is capable of continuous long recording of up to 14 hours. This is a critical feature for important occasions where operators may not have the luxury to stop the camera, such as during the filming of wedding ceremonies or other live events.

    • Ergonomic Handle & Controls

The ergonomically designed handle contains a convenient record button and zoom control, essential for low position shooting. There are also cold shoes on the front and rear of the handle, which allow for the attachment of two different types of accessories.

    • AVCHD – Ideal for Memory Recording

AVCHD is a highly efficient data compression format which greatly reduces memory requirements, maximizing the benefits of file-based recording with high image quality in a small file size. This is made possible by the exceptionally efficient MPEG4 AVC/H.264 codec at 50/60p@28mbps. Many consumer electronic devices already support AVCHD playback, and more are on the way. Numerous major NLE software programs feature AVCHD input and editing. The HXR-MC2500’s Standard Definition recording format is in DV memory format.

    • Additional professional features

A BNC Composite Terminal enables use of BNC cables for a professional secure connection, which prevents cable disconnect during critical shooting occasions such as live recording.

TC/UB Implementation: Time Code and User Bit are included for situations like multi-camera shoots

    • Separate PAL and NTSC models available

Depending on your region, separate models are available offering recording frame rates of 50p, 50i 25p Full HD and 50i SD (PAL model), or 60p, 60i, 30p, 25p Full HD and 60i SD (NTSC model).
